Do you have an easy time lifting a heavy mood?
Sometimes, you want to feel a little bit better, you want to make the people around you feel a better, and you need a pick-me-up, but you can't quite do it yourself. It's okay to need help.
I often thought of fun videos as an unproductive waste of time. I figured they don’t produce anything but entertainment, so they are of no value. However, as I’ve observed their part in my life, I have realized there actually is a lot of value that these sources of fun can bring to our lives.
Fun videos can provide stress release and help lighten the mood. They can help you out of a difficult conversation/situation, diffuse tension, and aid as repair attempts (as Gottman describes in The Seven Principles for Making a Marriage Work).
Sometimes when Ross and I are both really stressed out and have a hard time picking each other up, we will turn to fun internet videos that make us laugh. That gives us the push we need to pull ourselves back up. Thus, I’ve noticed the value that those kinds of wholesome fun have given to our relationship is reminding us to laugh.
Some funny videos are great icebreakers. This doesn’t necessarily work in all contexts, but occasionally you can show a funny video to someone you want to know better and you find yourselves laughing together, so now you have something to talk about. It can be a fun way to get to know each other or break an awkward silence. These videos can alter whatever current atmosphere there is and make it more upbeat and light.
Spark a conversation
This goes along with icebreaking; you can spark a conversation based on fun videos you watch. If you show someone a fun video and then you start chatting about it, who knows where that conversation will lead?
For instance, if you and I watched the video Math Class, I would immediately have a lot to say about the fact that I've tutored students just like that in community college. Who knows what comments that might spark from you as well.
My husband and I can go through all sorts of topics in one conversation; all you need is a good trigger. There are so many different topics that can all follow from one little thought. If you're trying to come up with a way to start a conversation, videos can help give you a thought.
General fun and bonding
It can be bonding to watch fun videos with people you care about. I know Ross and I have enjoyed countless videos together. We sit together and laugh. Ross has the cutest laugh you've ever heard; I adore it. He's so cute when he smiles, so when I find a way to make him laugh, it makes me really happy.
It’s bonding to laugh together. It's also good for you; there are health benefits to laughing a lot. As a bonus, this helps you create inside jokes that you can bring up and enjoy the benefits of.
List of funny videos
Here's a list of funny videos that I will use in various circumstances like if my students need a pick-me-up, if my husband and I want to get a few laughs out, or just for something fun to show my friends.
Studio C (Channel)
Dude Perfect Stereotypes (Channel)
Math Professor’s April Fools prank (Same professor, later year)
You can watch one or a few of these videos and hopefully they make you laugh. If you have any really good, clean humor for me, I'd love to see it! Please share it with me! Try showing it to a friend as well; see if you can make them laugh, spark a conversation, and bond together.
